The highlight of the week had to be the trip with Dale Peoples, his wife Jenny and their two kiddos Ranken and Rori. It was a birthday trip for "Crankin Ranken" and boy was it a good one. The entire family got in on the action, and it was non stop, for almost 4 straight hours! We were fishing live and dead shrimp on the reefs, on the bottom. You really did not know what was gonna happen when you set the hook. It could be a sheepshead, or puppy drum if you got near the structure. The big sea monster black drum, rat reds and ground mullet were holding just off the rocks. If you fished the current lines off the rocks, that is where the speckled trout(throw backs). were holding. It was about as perfect a bite you could have ever wanted for a 10 year olds Birthday Party. Non-stop action with variety in size and species. Take That Chuck-E-Chesse!!!
I had to make a run up to Hattiesburg, MS this past week. Got a chance to see my old stomping grounds, at the University of Southern Mississippi. Really have not been up to USM in about 12 or so years. I was always afraid they would take my diploma back, because of some sort of misprint... I was speaking for the "Catch More Fish with Science" seminar series. This was hands down the biggest and best one we have ever done. Our buddies Tommy and Asa with Boat Monkey Floats even showed up and let us hand out 2 huge bags of Boat Monkey Popping Corks!!! We got to hear scientists and Biologist speak about the life history of speckled trout and redfish. Then the guides get up and talk about tips and tactics on how to catch them. It was a hoot!!!
The rest of the week was the Capt Kenny and Capt Matt show. They put up some impressive numbers on the sheepshead, speckled trout, slot reds, black drum and the big sea monsters. Speaking of sea monsters, it looks like the sheepsheads are starting to push out and the black drum are coming in. It seems to go this way every year, but it looks like it is a little early with the warmer temps. Those massive drum should be here thick as thieves for Easter Break. If you ever wanted watch a younger angler catch a fish as big as them, this is the time of year and fish to do it with. Best of all, this type of fishing can be done minutes from the dock. Also, we are seeing more and more reds and trout on the near shore trips. Things are shaping up for a stellar Spring Bite. We will most likely stay in close, and play it safe with the weather and consistent bite. Yes, we will be in the Louisiana Marsh soon. Honestly though, none of our guides are in a big rush. Happy crews, with great fishing right in the front yard, we are having a great time!!!
